Formula E for Beginners

Going into the seventh season of Formula E, we can observe several changes in the paddock: new drivers who joined as rookies, passages between the < /span>teams, different software, different hardware, new rivalries…

Let's start with the prevailing champions, DS Techeetah, this is the first time in the history of Formula E that a team is made up of two champions: Jean-Éric Vergne and António Félix da Costa. DS Techeetah is, without a doubt, the closest thing to a dominant team in Formula E with three drivers' and two teams' championships to its name. However, the level of investment in competitive development is increasing and the challenge is increasing, so it will not be easy for them to stay on top. The team dynamics and the relationship between the drivers will be crucial to your success…

Nissan e.dams had to catch up after its twin engine was banned last year, but they eventually made up for lost time. They finished the season with multiple podium finishes for Buemi and a win for Rowland in the penultimate race. Coming off his worst season in Formula E, Buemi is more confident than ever. On the other hand, his teammate Oliver Rowland demonstrated incredible qualifying pace and the ability to
win in a highly competitive environment.

Continuity Mercedes Benz EQ is key: Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries
remain as drivers of the new Silver Arrow 02. Last season, Mercedes BenzEQ had a solid finish getting their first victory and podium 1-2. This is one of the most promising teams in the paddock and no wonder, backed by the German manufacturer with a successful record in motorsport. With Vandoorne taking second place in the championship and de Vries the best of the rookies, Mercedes Benz EQ is definitely one of the favorites this season.

With Sam Bird leaving for Jaguar, Envision Virgin Racing decided to sign Nick Cassidy as his replacement. Cassidy has a wealth of motorsport experience, having claimed the Japanese Super GT Formula 3 triple crown and Super Formula titles. He will be partnered with Dutchman Robin Frinjs, who finished high in Berlin with four poles and two podiums. The team will continue to use Audi powertrains, having high chances to fight for victories.

For BMW and Andretti Motorsport, last season was the best so far. They achieved three victories, one for the young driver Maximilian Guenther, who in 2020 did not suffer the same fate and finished with 8 DNFs. With teammate Alexander Lynn leaving the team, BMW signed British driver Jake Dennis, who impressed with a strong performance during private testing and simulators.

Audi Sport ABT maintains both drivers who competed during last season: Lucas di Grassi, former Formula E champion and René Rast, current champion of the DTM. Consistency is key in Formula E and Grassi was one of three full-time drivers to finish every race last season and gain an average of 6 positions by race. Grassi's experience and tenacity combined with a powerful powertrain of its own, Audi could be back to position itself at the top, in what will be its last championship in the category.

Jaguar Racing made the decision to sign a pilot with experience and success, and who better than someone who has competed and won a race in all the seasons so far : Sam Bird. Since the series' inception in 2014, Bird has scored nine wins, eighteen podium finishes, five pole positions and five fastest laps. An impressive CV in Formula E to which the British driver wants to add even more praise. He will be partner of Mitch Evans, dominant force regarding the sum of points. Both favorites to win the championship.

Offering a promising start in Formula E, the Tag Heuer Porsche team is focused on closing the gap with Mercedes Benz EQ, who finished third in the championship. For that, they signed the pilot Pascal Wehrlein as a partner of the legend André Lotterer. Pascal has an experience of 17 races in the Mahindra team, where he got a total of 72 points, a pole position and a podium.

With Jerome D'Ambrossio leaving Mahindra, Alexander Lynn joins the team after an incredible performance in Berlin in search for greater success.

Edoardo Mortara, pilot of ROKiT Venturi Racing, last season surpassed his teammate Felipe Massa, finishing seven times inside the top 10 and showing that he is a rider who can fight the big manufacturers. Norman Nato joins as his partner with great support and a vote of confidence from the team.

For the team with the new name of Dragon Penske Autosport, the 2019-20 season was not the best. Brendon Hartley was replaced by the Brazilian Sérgio Sette Câmara and Nico Mueller managed to add only two points throughout the season. NIO 333 made big changes personally and seeks to improve its performance with a new powertrain. Oliver Turvey, one of the most underrated drivers, is hoping he can have a car up to the task because the driver, Tom Blomqvist, who we saw at the Andretti for part of 2018 is coming on board.

So far we have had six rounds in Diriyah, Rome and Valencia, where each and every one of the drivers scored points. However, it is the Mercedes Benz EQ team with the duo de Vries - Vandoorne, who leads the championship.

The next race will take place next Saturday May 8th at the iconic Monaco circuit and we hope to have as close a competition as has been seen so far. If you are new and interested in the topic, with this brief summary you are ready to join the competition.
